Letter to America

Max Coutinho Av. Da República nº 9, 14º andar 1600-205 Lisboa Portugal Tel: 351 98 293 06 09 26th of October, 2008 Dear United States of America, It is with great joy that I pen down this missive to you, which I hope it finds you enjoying of good wealth health (please, do pardon my temporarily lack of sensibility; I am quite aware of the economic & financial constraints you are experiencing right now… and if there is something that I can do for you, and yours, please do not hesitate to request for our aid – times are harsh on everybody, but what are friends for?). I have been receiving news about the upcoming Presidential elections there: you must be tremendously excited about it! I also learned that for the very first time you are having a black candidate …oops; pardon my European nature once again; I meant Afro-American candidate (although I do not understand why you insist on designating Black people nés [1] in your country as Afro…darling, they are not African, they don’t e...

Ethics: the Help and its Best

How much appreciation should be demonstrated towards someone who works under another one’s decree? Plenty, I’d say. The Help Vs its Best I find it rather distasteful when someone mistreats and disrespects the help. People should never forget what servants do for them: clean their bathroom(s) [and God only knows, that when they are unfortunate enough to work for a total pig, what it all encompasses]; clean their mess [when they drink and spill it all over; when they regurgitate the contents of their stomach; when they step into the house/flat with their muddy shoes etc]; clean their house; wash their clothes and underwear [I say, everybody should wash their own underwear – for the moment, I’ll excuse myself from explaining why]; put up with their rude children; wash their car; take care of their garden; keep them company; secure their family etc…Servants organise the life of the people they work for; they witness their miseries; they make sure that their home is the place that they long...

Chained

Imagine a brain, a heart and a soul all chained up...that is a woman. When a woman is born, the brainwash operation is launched: girls wear pink; girls play with dolls; girls play with kitchen sets; girls play with girls; girls must be nice and kind; girls smile all the time; young ladies must be careful with kissing boys; young ladies must remain pure; they must be virgins in order to find a good husband (as if virginity represented a safe collateral); women must have kids; women must have a husband; women must, must, must… Women have come a long way. They have battled through injustice, humiliation, disrespect and have conquered many rights, yet they remain under balls and chain. Yes, it sounds rather shocking…preposterous even; but if you look around closely you’ll realize how true it is. The female gender complains about sexism…who perpetuates it? Women do. How? By actively participating in the brainwash operation. Why do they do it? Because since they’ve been brainwashed, the...

The Lusosphere: Brazil

When the Portuguese "discovered" Brazil this country was already inhabited by 2 million indigenous (which were divided into 3 main tribes: the Tupi-guarani, Jê and Aruaque. The Tupis were sub-divided into the Guaranis, the Tupiniquins and the Tupinambás). So, in some cases when we use the term "discovery" (when referring to Brazil, Mozambique and Angola) we are in fact in error, since these nations had already been discovered by previous civilizations. 22nd of April 1500 : Pedro Álvares Cabral arrived in Brazil, whom initially called it "Ilha de Vera Cruz" (Vera Cruz Island), since at first it was thought that it was an island; but after further geographic expeditions it was concluded that Vera Cruz was part of a continent and so the Portuguese re-named it to "Terra da Santa Cruz" (The Land of Santa Cruz; where today is Porto Seguro, in the Brazilian State of Bahia). 26th of April 1500 : Father Henrique de Coimbra celebrated the first Mass. The...

Sacrilege: Bra Severance

Since when trashy became trendy? I wonder where the concept of class went… This past weekend I ventured myself on a tour around the TV world – I have never seen so many naked breasts in my life. At first I thought it was a TV thing: movie stars, pop artists, models etc; however when I step into the streets, malls, clubs, bars…there they are: breasts, in all shapes and sizes, exposed as if waiting for someone to bid for them. Leaving home is quite an adventure for those who advocate modesty, good taste, class and real fashion: one looks at the right – butt cracks being flashed; one looks at the left –braless chests nearly exhibiting its nipples. Ladies and Gentlemen, good sense, sensibility and decorum have left the building. Why on earth did women declare war on brassieres? There is nothing sexier than beautiful lingerie. And with the variety of designs and colours there is today, women should feel encouraged to actually wear it. But no...they prefer to auction their mammary glands. My...
