The Sudanese President is continuing his diplomatic charm offensive regarding another key African Security Issue. After showing his continued influence regarding the morass in South Sudan, he is trying to deflect from his arms trafficking in Libya by supporting one of his main allies' activities.

Northern Vulnerabilities: Russian Aggression and the Alliance Response

The Russian Federation has had an aggressive posture towards the Western Powers, for several years now, in various crisis spots. The country has projected power from the South Ossetia region (in Georgia) and the Crimea (in Ukraine) to the seemingly never ending war in Syria and to placing mercenaries in the Central African Republic.

The response from NATO members has been haphazard at best. There seems to be a concerted effort to assure the Baltic Republics and Poland that the alliance takes any overt move by Russia seriously.

There is a glaring vulnerability that needs to be addressed as well: the Northern Flank of the Alliance. One could not pick up a novel depicting a Third World War without seeing as part of the plot a breakout into the North Atlantic by Submarines of the Soviet era navy. Other scenarios had Soviet troops invading and occupying both Iceland and Norway too.

World Terrorist Attacks Preceded by Terror in Israel

On Tuesday, the post ISIS, Turkey and Russia: the End of Days? claimed that each major terrorist attack against the West was preceded by an intensification of terrorism in Israel. This note intends not only to support that claim but to also show that even terror attacks beyond the Western World were preceded by an intensification of Palestinian terror in the Holy Land. This fact, once again, builds a connection between Global Jihad and the so-called Palestinian Cause.

Insurgent Attacks in Burkina Faso: To Fund Terror or to Weaken the Government?

When the threat to the Sahel region is assessed most concerns automatically turn to Mali as an area currently under threat. The factors that led to the Military Coup, in 2012, and the subsequent rebellion in the Northern Part of the Country have not been met for various reasons. But the virus appears to have spread throughout the region.

Even though there have been major efforts by the United States and the European Union to bolster the flanks by increasing the capacity of the Nigerien Military there remains unresolved issues that could bring the region back into a state of chaos similar to Mali in recent years. One country that currently finds itself as a potential ground zero is Burkina Faso.

Update: Operations in the Sahel

Within the last fortnight two events have taken place in the Sahel that should have analysts both intrigued and concerned: the first event took place in Niger (a State of Emergency now exists in the provinces adjoining the border with Burkina Faso since December 1st). There have also been a series of low intensity attacks in recent weeks in Burkina. Several factors are at play in this situation being one one of them economic - others include spillover from Mali and blowback from Libya.

Niger & Burkina Faso: Crucial to restore Stability to the Sahel

Most thought their concerns were the borders with Mali and with other nations facing issues such as Ivory Coast and Togo. Several EU nations supporting the Peacekeeping Mission in Mali, such as Germany, are using Niger as a logistics base for their troops supporting the mission. The United States flies UAVs from Niger in support of several Operations in the region as well.
