Shopping for God

Picture a shopping mall.

Inside, there are cute little different stores; each one with appealing products for the market they target. However, there are segments of the market that take pleasure in making shopping decisions that make no sense at all; revealing, thus, a profound sense of confusion and incoherence (all under the flag of freedom of choice).

Believing in a Higher Creative Energy.

Entering a store called Judaism. Looking around; disliking many things there: so many rituals (take the Shabbat for instance: burning the candles before sunset; singing in Hebrew; breaking the bread; all those blessings; not to mention all the time spent with family “It’s so stressing!”); so much fasting during the year; so much Torah reading; the 613 mitzvot; the relationship with Eretz Yisrael…it’s too much confusion. Just buy a relationship with God and get the hell out of there before coming across with a Rav (= Rabbi).

Entering a store called Christianity. Looking around; being confused about many things: each denomination claiming to be truer than the next; the several different rituals; Sunday morning services; the tithe for the church (“Why should my money go to there?”); Jesus’ teachings, is he a god or not; offering the other cheek…it’s too much. Just buy a metal cross to wear when clubbing and scurry off the store before being subjected to an evangelical conversion.

Entering a store called Buddhism. Looking around; ridiculing the mental discipline required: daily meditation; acknowledging that life is pain (we are here to suffer); following the Eightfold Path; the 4 Noble Truths; the mantras; detaching oneself from matter; frugality…no way. Just buy the concept of a non-intervening god and split before being appointed as the reincarnation of a past Lama.

After having bought incense and a Shiva image at Hinduism; a Ying Yang symbol at Taoism; a Hand of Fatima at Islamism; a Fertility Statue at Animism; a Pentagram at Wiccan; flowers to offer to Yemanja at Candomblé and nihilism at Atheism…one feels prepared to fully live inadequately, unadjusted, free of personal accountability and to be Zen...

…Spiritual Schizophrenia…

  1. Haha... yep,all the human interpretation of God is very confusing and we end up practising only PART of a religion, the few aspects that we thnk we understand.

And at times we forget that the most important part is to just be humane :)

Keep posting, your blog's a good read!

  2. At least you are still shopping! Much of the world has given up, and declared it an evil pursuit.

  3. Hey Loshini :D!

    Welcome to the MAX experience!

You are so right: more than professing a religion we should focus on being humane :).

"Keep posting, your blog's a good read!" - thanks *bowing*!

Loshini, thank you ever so much for having shared your opinion on this; and know that you are extremely welcome here :D!

  4. Hey D! :D

LOL oh no, I am not shopping (my relationship with God is quite solid and He knows where I stand) ;).

"Much of the world has given up, and declared it an evil pursuit."

And look where the world is heading: to total chaos. But you know, sometimes I think that religions are accountable for this "rebellion"...specially when they wish to do what only God can: to judge.

D, always a pleasure to see you here; and thanks for sharing your thoughts on this subject :D!

  6. PART 1

    “Picture a shopping mall…”

Honestly Max you have to do something with the parking at your Spiritual Shopping Mall…speed bumps everywhere…no proper lines for the parking stalls…the sings are a maze…a zillion doors after climbing all those stairs…busy shopping increased by current economic woes…the buffet has a line up!

“revealing, thus, a profound sense of confusion and incoherence”

Wow! The inside is like the outside…This is very different from my mall…Frankly the differences in the various beliefs in all of the major religions/faiths/spiritual perspectives are generally very clear. The God of the Bible is very different from the god of Islam, Hinduism, Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses for example…

The way of genuinely worshiping the God of the Bible and living with Him for eternity is very different than that of Islam, Hinduism, Roman Catholicism, Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses for example…

They are very different so it is simple to not get confused…however many people like to intone that it is too confusing so they feel they have a copout…I know that before I became a follower of Jesus I was desperately seeking loop holes…

“Believing in a Higher Creative Energy”

Sounds like our provincial energy providers…hmmm…no not at the mall…Another good way to delineate the differences…in Islam Allah is not personal but the God of the Bible is personal…Buddhism has no real god…the Mormon’s idea is that you can become a god or goddess…The God of the Bible is living and personal not simply a “Higher Creative Energy”

    “Entering the store called Judaism”

Well there are a LOT of different booths in this store! I will head right over to the real thing…the Jewish Messiah Jesus crossroads…Owner of the Land…

    ReplyDelete
  7. PART 2

    “Entering a store called Christianity”

My Graffiti post of course deals with this with a bit more detail but let me touch upon this “store”…there really is only one genuine Jesus “store”…there are also other imposters such as the Mormon store, Jehovah’s Witnesses store and the Roman Catholic store…but this is really easy to understand…for example all three of these examples add to the Bible…they have other “authoritive teachings” or “holy books”…

So you could say there is the Genuine Biblical Jesus Store (the real Designer) and the expensive knock offs made in China…or more precisely Rome, Utah or Brooklyn…

Roman Catholic’s believe you get to God by being religious and doing good deeds including those they have devised themselves. Jehovah’s Witnesses use external teachings to say Jesus is not God and that you get to God by being religious and doing good deeds including those they have devised themselves. Mormon’s believe in more than one god and that a human can become a god or goddess and that you get to God by being religious and doing good deeds including those they have devised themselves.

The Bible teaches that you can only get to God by God’s grace alone, through faith alone in Jesus alone and that the Bible alone is His message to us…You do not get to God by being good or religious…there is only one true God and we cannot become gods or goddesses…

If the Roman Catholics, Jehovah’s Witnesses or Mormon’s say they believe these things alone from the Bible then they can prove it by quitting their current fellowships and going to a genuine Bible teaching Church…come to the Genuine Biblical Jesus Store…its FREE Jesus already paid for you…which is a good thing because we humans are bankrupt…

So there you go…easy to understand very basic and important differences…

    “Entering a store called Buddhism”

I ask for a cup of water, pay for and find it is only half full… Buddhism teaches there is no God, it is clear there is a God so its easy to then go to the Genuine Biblical Jesus Store…

    “After having bought”

This is a major difference between genuine Jesus following and all the rest…in genuine Christianity Jesus has done all the work and purchasing…He offers it all to you for free…just turn from yourself, trust Him alone and receive the gift (a gift cannot be earned but it can be received)…nothing for you to buy…but of course people like to feel they did it their way…and earned their way…

Interesting kaleidoscope you have written Max and nicely dished up…what kind of food do you serve at your malls food court?

  8. Max, does your store offer volume discounts? And what about money back guarantees and warranties? Can I take a religion out for a test drive?

    Regarding your comment to Delirious:

"... specially when they wish to do what only God can: to judge. "

The trendy new iReligions never 'judge', but they are heavily into working hard for 'justice'. I am still trying to grasp how someone can work for 'justice', but never 'judge'. Isn't 'justice' the act of carrying out the decision of a wise 'judge'? As a sales expert for the various products, can you give me any help on this?

ROFL ROFL ROFL...I loved this section...you kill me *nodding*.

"The God of the Bible is very different from the god of Islam, Hinduism, Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses for example…"

Perhaps you mean to say that the way to deal with, address and discuss God is different in the several different belief systems, right? Because you know well that there is only One God, as He (Himself) told us:
"(...) that the Lord, He is God, there is no other besides Him" (Deut. 4:35)
"I am the Lord, and there is no other" (Isaiah 45:5)
"Remember the former things long past, for I am God, and there no other; I am God, and there is no one like Me," (Isaiah 46:9)

"The way of genuinely worshiping the God of the Bible and living with Him for eternity is very different than that of Islam, Hinduism, Roman Catholicism, Mormonism and Jehovah’s Witnesses for example…"

Before there was a Bible there Was God already, so...

"[“Entering the store called Judaism”] Well there are a LOT of different booths in this store! I will head right over to the real thing…the Jewish Messiah Jesus crossroads…Owner of the Land…"

The same way there are a LOT of different booth in the other stores; wouldn't you say? Jesus is not the Jewish Messiah...but perhaps you are not as quite informed about Judaism as we'd thought you would *nodding*.

"My Graffiti post of course deals with this with a bit more detail but let me touch upon this “store”…there really is only one genuine Jesus “store”…there are also other imposters such as the Mormon store, Jehovah’s Witnesses store and the Roman Catholic store…"

And now you have just proved one of the points to this article "each denomination claiming to be truer than the next"...it is this sort of behaviour that drives people away from any spiritual path *nodding*. Besides, who nominated you the Spiritual Authority to label the Mormons, JW and Roman Catholics as imposters?

"So you could say there is the Genuine Biblical Jesus Store (the real Designer) and the expensive knock offs made in China…or more precisely Rome, Utah or Brooklyn…"

LOL LOL This passage made me laugh to tears *nodding*....

"Roman Catholic’s believe you get to God by being religious and doing good deeds including those they have devised themselves. Jehovah’s Witnesses use external teachings to say Jesus is not God and that you get to God by being religious and doing good deeds including those they have devised themselves. Mormon’s believe in more than one god and that a human can become a god or goddess and that you get to God by being religious and doing good deeds including those they have devised themselves."

But they all believe in God and in Jesus, don't they? What is false about this belief?

"The Bible teaches that you can only get to God by God’s grace alone, through faith alone in Jesus alone and that the Bible alone is His message to us…You do not get to God by being good or religious…there is only one true God and we cannot become gods or goddesses…"

The Bible teaches that if you love God with all your heart, if you convert to Him and follow His law you get His grace, mercy, love, favour, forgiveness....any and everything from Him; yes?
"But this is what I commanded them, saying, Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in all the way which I command you, that it may be well with you." (Jeremiah 7:23)
"so that you may remember to do all My commandments and be holy to your God." (Numbers 15:40)

If you are holy to God, it means that not only you get to Him but you are sacred to Him.

"Interesting kaleidoscope you have written Max and nicely dished up…what kind of food do you serve at your malls food court?"

  13. Hey Maximus!

WOW you have flipped the place around!!!!! Nice!!!

    PART 1

There is one true living God. Many people worship none existing gods, since they do not exist they are not worshiping a real God. For example if Max worshipped Barrack Obama she would be worshipping a fake god. Obama is not God he is just a man (now now don’t get to excited). Therefore when a person worships Obama they are not worshipping God (and certainly not the same God as in the Bible). The God of the Bible tells people to not worship fakes because they are not really gods (and only the God of the bible should be worshipped) but many people still decide to worship fakes like the god and goddess of Mormonism (“heavenly father” and “heavenly mother”)...

    PART 2

“And now you have just proved one of the points to this article "each denomination claiming to be truer than the next"...it is this sort of behaviour that drives people away from any spiritual path *nodding*. Besides, who nominated you the Spiritual Authority to label the Mormons, JW and Roman Catholics as imposters?”

    - LOL Well first these are not separate denomination these are different religions. They are completely different, they have different source material (inspired sources), different views of the character of God, different views on how to get to Heaven etc...they are VERY different...I am certainly not a spiritual authority however I have studied all of the major belief systems etc...that being said the Bible is the authoritative source...Mormons, JW’s and Roman Catholics add to the Bible.

Mormons have the KJV Bible, Pearl of Great Price, Doctrine and Covenants, plus Book of Mormon. JW’s allegedly receive direct additional different revelation for their magazines from an invisible Jesus who is an angel. Roman Catholics have the Bible and the Pope sitting in ex cathedra. Christians have the Bible alone...These are huge differences!

“So you could say there is the Genuine Biblical Jesus Store (the real Designer) and the expensive knock offs made in China…or more precisely Rome, Utah or Brooklyn…"
LOL LOL This passage made me laugh to tears *nodding*....”

    - Notice the fakes are the expensive ones...not the original Designer...I know you like the China part! LOL

“But they all believe in God and in Jesus, don't they? What is false about this belief?”

    - The meaning of “believe” is different, the meaning of “God” and “Jesus” are different...

    - David broke God’s Law so how does he get into Heaven? Abraham sinned...You are talking about mercy but this is not grace...they are different.

8 God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. 9 Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. 10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
    - - Ephesians 2:8-10 NLT

    How do you become holy?

    “Kosher food”

  20. Max:

Hey, that's a great way to frame your subject.

Imagine entering a store named Atheism. It's dark and cold, like the city morgue at midnight, with cool concrete floors and one flourescent light that shines down like ice water, and the walls are dirty and gray, not even a picture, and the store is closed during the week but open on Sundays. In fact, Sunday is the busiest shopping day of the entire week with people crowding over each other to take advantage of the "For Sale" items: marital aids and erotic books. And as you leave, there's a sign that says, EXIT HERE, and when you open the door there's a dark tunnel and a steep slide that takes you right downstairs, the fast way!

    Happy trails

  21. Hi Max,

If God were a designer label, everyone would want it, but since it comes with the strings of religion attached, people mislabel it. God lives within the walls of our spirit, we never have to shop for it because we already have it. One size fits all.

Another provocative piece highlighting your brilliance.

Now, if I had been brought into this world without RC, short for rock chopper – Roman Catholic - after my name, or anything else for that matter, heaven knows what religion I would have followed.

No doubt I would have shopped around till something suited me, as I do believe there has to be a supreme being out there somewhere.

  26. Great post Max. Now I speak from experience, not only do I have a personal relationship with my God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit, I work in a mall, what a clever idea to draw parallels between the various religions and shopping.

Problem with Malls is you can spend hours in them without really doing any buying,if you don't know what you want or need, I see this happening daily in my mall.

People know they need or want something they just don't know what so they browse, like in malls, good to know ahead of time what you want before you go looking, that's why it is good to advertise and tell of your stores product, the advantages and why you should purchase this or that product in your store, at our mall they use our electronic reader boards in the parking lot, or radio, evangelism is what is used for Christianity, just someone telling another what God has done for them.

When I bought my camera it was mostly because someone told me what it had done for them, I went to the store said I want it and bought it and was out even though there was a gazillion other cameras in the store which seemed just like it, I was very happy with my purchase.

I could go into the basics of each of the religions or faiths you have mentioned, I've heard and seen their adverts but I wanted something that would give me a personal and up close relationship with my God, I can talk in real time with God through the Holy Spirit and get an answer immediately if it is required, I could go on and on how He has helped me, sometimes it was spooky, but a good spooky how fast something was answered, sorry for rambling but it is about spirituality not religions, religions are just something we as humans make up, spirituality is having your very being in touch with your God in real time.

  29. Hey LSus!

"WOW you have flipped the place around!!!!! Nice!!!"

LOL indeed, I have. Thanks :D.

"For example if Max worshipped Barrack Obama..."

This would never happen...and this example is a bit poor...

"(...) but many people still decide to worship fakes like the god and goddess of Mormonism (“heavenly father” and “heavenly mother”)..."

Did God create man and woman? Yes. Since Adam was made to God's image, and Even was built from Adam's rib; doesn't this mean that God has both the feminine and masculine energies in Him? Wouldn't this mean that He is also a She? Yes, it does; yes, it would.

"LOL Well first these are not separate denomination these are different religions."

They are all Christians...therefore, they are different denominations from within the Christian community (therefore, different in the way they address Christianity).

"They are completely different, they have different source material (inspired sources), different views of the character of God, different views on how to get to Heaven etc...they are VERY different.."

    Different, nevertheless...Christian.

"Christians have the Bible alone...These are huge differences!"

And they don't even follow it in its entirety. They simply choose which part of the Bible to follow...don't they?

"Notice the fakes are the expensive ones...not the original Designer...I know you like the China part! LOL"

    LOL LOL...

"(...) the meaning of “God” and “Jesus” are different..."

    You got that right...

"David broke God’s Law so how does he get into Heaven? Abraham sinned...You are talking about mercy but this is not grace...they are different."

Yes, David gets into Heaven...because he never stopped serving the Lord, although he trangressed:
"I have wiped out your transgressions like a thick cloud, and your sins like a heavy mist. Return to Me, for I have redeemed you." (Isaiah 44:22).
Abraham transgressed but he never stopped being loyal to the Lord.
"Your" version of grace doesn't make sense.

    "How do you become holy?"

""For you are a holy people to the LOrd your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth." (Deut. 7:6).

“["Kosher food”] LOL Mmmmm sea bugs..."

C.C, thank you ever so much for your outstanding comment :D!

  41. Hi Peter :D!

"Born a catholic, brought up as a catholic, wandered in faith overtime but still a catholic; mind you a non-practising one at that, who funny enough still believes in God and still says he prayers."

Halleluyiah for all of that! :D

"Now, if I had been brought into this world without RC, short for rock chopper – Roman Catholic - after my name, or anything else for that matter, heaven knows what religion I would have followed."

LOL LOL "RC, short for rock chopper - Roman Catholic -"...loved it! It could've been any...

"No doubt I would have shopped around till something suited me, as I do believe there has to be a supreme being out there somewhere."

I shopped around when I was a teen, only to go back to the same place I was: God's path. However, I never mixed ingredients...I was that consistent (at least that).

Peter, my Catholic friend, loved your comment (as always): thank you :D!

    Cheers

  42. Hi Bob :D!

"Great post Max. Now I speak from experience, not only do I have a personal relationship with my God through Jesus and the Holy Spirit, I work in a mall, what a clever idea to draw parallels between the various religions and shopping."

    Thanks, man *bowing*.

"Problem with Malls is you can spend hours in them without really doing any buying,if you don't know what you want or need, I see this happening daily in my mall."

This is true for some people...

"People know they need or want something they just don't know what so they browse, like in malls, good to know ahead of time what you want before you go looking, that's why it is good to advertise (...) at our mall they use our electronic reader boards in the parking lot, or radio, evangelism is what is used for Christianity, just someone telling another what God has done for them."

I am not much of a fan of evangelism, or proselytism for that matter; however I understand the analogy used...

"(...) sorry for rambling but it is about spirituality not religions, religions are just something we as humans make up, spirituality is having your very being in touch with your God in real time."

Indeed, spirituality is at the reach of anybody at any time; whereas religion...well, it carries a lot of baggage with it and not everybody is has the stamina to belong to one (although there are people who are convince they have the stamina for it; only to prove through their actions that they don't).
I am glad you found your spiritual path, Bob. God Bless you! :D

Bob, excellent comment (in which you shared your personal experience), for which I thank you a million times :D!

    Cheers

  45. Max dear that is very interesting. You know as I got older I found many positive things and negative things about each religion. I am catholic, and there are somethings that don't go well with me how church does it. I read some Buddhism, and it was interesting. I think on the end you will never find perfect religion for yourself, so I keep being what my parents assigned me to, and just make it better, meaning I am in control, and not the church, if comes to God it is different story. Dear Max, I will get back to you later. My dad is having hip replacement surgery next week, so I will be a bit everywhere. Thanks for your friendship girl, I will get back to you soon as I can, and wishing you always well. Anna :)

Think of the old doilies she used to angebote thomas sabo make. Lace is on everything these days from clothing, handbags and the rest of the accessories. You will see handbags made out of it or adorned with it. It is made into lightweight thomas sabo flowy scarves. Bangles are big and anhänger thomas sabo covered in lace with matching necklaces and earrings. The thomas sabo kette necklaces have lace beaded into it, thomas sabo 2010 beaded with lacey disk beads thomas sabo online shop or lacey beads themselves. It will not be hard to find a great shirt with lace on the top and accessorize it with matching earrings, thomas sabo halsschmuck necklaces, scarves or handbags. thomas sabo ohrringe Use them tastefully together but don't go overboard. A little of each goes a long way. Handmade is big in this category so don't go looking only at stores; keep those art shows in mind for that unique great find.
