Musical Video: "Balancê" by Sara Tavares

Sara Tavares is a Portuguese singer, composer and guitar player (born in Lisbon, on the 1st of February of 1978).
Her songs have been labelled as African influenced World Music.

I decided to share this artist with you, because I wanted to show you the warm & joyous musical facette of Portugal.
Our former African colonies brought their joie-de-vivre, their relaxed stance, their positive & party mood to us - which offset our somber side (Fado).

This week's video is entitled "Balancê" (the swing); and I selected it because it embodies the very spirit of the Discovery Era: discovery, cultural exchange & enrichment, love, happiness, wealth!

Enjoy!

Lyrics

Balancê

Como vi dançar no Zimbabué
Quero também contigo gingar
Uma dança nova
Mistura de Semba com Samba
De Mambo com Rumba
Tua mão na minha
E a minha na tua

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Swinga para lá
Swinga pra cá ye

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Maria José
Swing no pé
Senão chega p'ra lá ye

Somos livres para celebrar
Somos livres para nos libertar
Como crianças brincando
Crianças sorrindo
Crianças sendo crianças... ah!
Como crianças brincando
Crianças sorrindo
Crianças...

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Swinga para lá
Swinga pra cá ye

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Maria José
Swing no pé

Swing no pé
Senão chega p'ra lá ye

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Swinga para lá
Swinga pra cá ye

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Maria José
Swing no pé
Senão chega p'ra lá ye

Swing

Like I saw dancing in Zimbabwe
I want to move my hips with you,
A new dance
A Mix of Semba and Samba,
Mambo and Rumba
Your hand in mine,
Mine in yours

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Swing over there
Swing over here ye

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Maria José
Swing with your foot
Otherwise move over ye

We are free to celebrate
We are free to liberate
As children playing,
Children smiling
Children being children...ah!
As children playing,
Children smiling
Children...

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Swing over there
Swing over here ye

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Maria José
Swing with your foot
Otherwise move over ye

I love it when you let yourself go like that
Close your eyes and only dance for me
Your own dance,
A mix of "uh-uh you won't" and a smile
That says, however, that your despite
Is nothing but somebody's sunrise
Saying that it goes but comes
Can't you see? You can't fool me.

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Swing over there
Swing over here ye

Balancê ye
Balança ya
Maria José
Swing with your foot
Otherwise move over ye
(2x)

  1. Max:

I loved the video. My foot was tapping under the desk. Then I took a pencil and started to tap on everything I saw in tune with the beat. But when I began to sing they lyrics out loud, my Queen told me to be quiet!

    Happy trails.

    Ps:

Stop by and read about A Christmas Mystery.
